Position Purpose:

All KHI employees are expected to perform their respective tasks and duties in such a way that supports KHI’s vision to be among the kindest, highest quality health systems in the country.

This position is responsible for the protection, safeguarding and security of assets, personnel, customers and all visitors.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Serves as the on‑duty lead, providing daily direction, post assignments, and coverage oversight for unarmed security officers across hospital and affiliated properties.
  • Provides leadership, mentoring, and coaching to security staff, models professional conduct, customer service, and policy compliance.
  • Responds to alarms, calls for service, and security incidents including disturbances, suspicious behavior, patient elopement, missing persons, and staff assistance needs.
  • Uses approved de‑escalation and crisis intervention techniques to manage aggressive behavior, behavioral health events, and volatile situations.
  • Assists clinical staff with disruptive or unsafe patients and visitors using non‑force intervention methods.
  • Coordinates and participates in emergency responses including fire alarms, medical events, hazardous conditions, lockdowns, and disaster situations.
  • Oversee access control and visitor management processes, including badges, restricted areas, and after‑hours access.
  • Completes and reviews incident reports accurately and timely; preserves scene safety and coordinates with law enforcement when appropriate.
  • Ensures continuous compliance with unarmed security protocols, hospital policies, privacy requirements, and applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Conducts or supports courier, patrol, alarm response, and other assigned driving duties, including travel to off‑site hospital or organizational locations as needed.
  • Maintains required certifications and training; supports a culture of safety, service excellence, and continuous improvement. 
  • When the Security Operations Manager is out of town or otherwise unavailable, serves as the designated point of contact for day-to-day security operations when formally assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support overall effectiveness of department and organization.

 

Qualifications 

Education: High school diploma or equivalent - MUST provide proof with Diploma or Official Transcripts upon hire

Certification/Licensure:

  • Possession of a current and valid U.S. motor vehicle license. Must be 21 years of age or older.  Must remain eligible to drive, per KHI policy. 

  • De-Escalation class within 90 days of hire.

  • BLS within 90 days of hire.   (American Heart Association or American Red Cross only).

  • Obtain and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Unarmed Security Guard License.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Working knowledge of hospital security, safety, and emergency response protocols.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact professionally with patients, visitors, staff, and leadership.

  • Demonstrated planning, organization, and prioritization skills to support daily security operations.

  • Basic computer proficiency to complete incident reports, logs, and electronic communications.

  • Ability to operate and monitor surveillance, alarm, and access control systems.

  • Ability to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

  • Proven ability to manage, de‑escalate, and resolve confrontational or disruptive situations using approved non‑force techniques.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while exercising sound judgment.

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, workloads, and emergent situations. 

  • Ability to make timely, appropriate decisions in the organization’s best interest when a supervisor is unavailable and to seek guidance when escalation is needed.

Preferences 

Education:  College level degree.

Experience:

      Prior private security, public law enforcement or lead experience.

  • De-escalation or workplace violence prevention training. 

 

Certification/Licensure:

  • Arizona security officer license.
  • International Association of Healthcare Security Certification and/or Safety as a Certified Healthcare

 Security Officer (CHSO). 

Completion of FEMA IS 100, 200, 700 and 800.

Special Position Requirements 

Exposure Categories:

· Category II: Expected duties have possible, but not routine, potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.

· Exposure to chemical, biological, and radioactive substances: Asbestos, Formaldehyde, Ethylene oxide, Mercury.

· Routine exposure to potentially hostile individuals: workplace violence.

Work Requirements 

· Must be able to stand and walk for 60% to 70% of the time; must be able to sit 30% to 40% of the time; must be able to run.

· Must be able to distinguish phone rings and callers’ voices against regular background noise and conversation.

· Occasionally bends, stoops, kneels, climbs, and descends ramps, stairs, ladders and reaches in the daily functions of duties.

· Must be able to lift 40 to 50 pounds.
